Grave Seasons Day & Night Cycle

Perfect Garbage's official "Day & Night Cycle" devlog spells out how time works in Ashenridge. This page summarises those confirmed details; where we read into them, it is labelled as such.

A full 24-hour clock, with no hard bedtime

Grave Seasons runs on a 24-hour schedule. Unlike many farming games that force you to sleep at a fixed hour, the developers deliberately chose not to put a hard stop on the night. Their reasoning, in their words: some of the most ominous moments in Grave Seasons happen in the dark, and they wanted to embrace that tonal shift as you stay out too late "poking around in your neighbour's stuff."

Time is a resource

The devlog frames time itself as a resource. Rest is still needed to engage the full farming loop, but "live" time keeps ticking no matter what you do - so late nights are a trade-off, not a free action. You escaped from prison, and the game lets you use the cover of night to dig into Ashenridge's secrets.

NPCs live at night too

A full 24-hour system means the town does not switch off after dark. The devlog confirms NPCs can wander at night alongside you - late-night drinking, sitting by the docks at sunset - all feeding into what the team calls "nuanced NPC schedules." That makes nighttime a genuine investigation window, not just a visual filter.

Read into it carefully: the devlog does not say which residents are out at night, so treat any specific "who to watch after dark" claim as unverified until launch.

How the look was built

The art team blends early morning into midday, evening and late night rather than snapping between two states. After experimenting with shader lights, normal maps and dynamic shadows - none of which suited the hand-drawn, isometric 2D style - they settled on look-up tables (LUTs) and colour-tinting, plus a great deal of hand-painting. The result they cite: 70+ custom LUTs, hand-painted lighting for just under 70 interiors (including farm-building upgrades), and per-season tinting, with custom overrides so skin tone and key details stay readable across every condition.

Tonally, the lighting pushes the game toward a grounded, noir feel at night and a picturesque, Ghibli-like warmth by day - the calm, pastoral surface against the creeping dread of a new murder each month.

What this means for you

  • Plan snooping and evidence-gathering for the hours residents are out and about.
  • Remember the clock never pauses - budget nights against your farming needs.
  • Expect night to look and feel different by design, not just darker.

For spoiler-safe planning built on these systems, see our tips page, and for the town you will be exploring after dark, the map of Ashenridge. The cycle also drives the score - every seasonal theme has a separate night version by a different composer, covered on the soundtrack page.
