Grave Seasons Character Customization

Perfect Garbage's dev log confirmed exactly how much customization ships at launch. These are official numbers, not estimates.

What you can customize at launch

Everything in Grave Seasons is hand-made pixel art, so customization is not a menu of recoloured presets - each option is drawn and animated by hand. On launch the game will include:

  • 35 unique wearables
  • 25 skin tone options
  • A mix-and-match clothing style setup with 14 colour options
  • 33 ways to colour 18 different hairstyles

Why it is a big deal (technically)

Because the game animates in up to 8 directions, every wearable has to be drawn for each one. The devlog puts real numbers on that effort: each wearable is animated into 70+ sprite sheets, implemented as over 400 animations that can trigger throughout the game - reacting to a murder, sharing a kiss with a lover, passing out from exhaustion. The team even called out their commitment to the "hair bounce."

What we do not know yet

The devlog confirms the quantities but not the mechanics: how you unlock wearables, whether appearance can be changed freely after creation, and whether any cosmetics are tied to romance or story progress are all unconfirmed. We will fill those in from the release build rather than guess.

Treat any "best outfit" or unlock-order claim you see elsewhere as speculation until launch.

Where this fits

Character customization pairs with the game's heavy narrative focus - 300k+ words and 30+ residents to build relationships with. For the residents themselves, see the character tracker; for relationship routes, the romance guide. For how the art team thinks about pixel art - and why they treat its limits as a horror advantage - see the art style devlog.
